Steps to Fix The 1706 Error in Windows

The 1706 error is a common problem for millions of Windows PCs, and is caused by your PC being unable to correctly install a piece of software onto your computer. The error is generally caused by your computer's inability to correctly read the installation files required to put the software onto your PC, or from having some other problems with the settings of your system.

Causes of 1706 Error:
  • You originally installed Microsoft Office from a network administrative installation.
  • The network administrative installation is no longer available to you.
  • You are trying to use an Office CD-ROM when you are prompted by the Windows Installer for an Office source location.
  • You click Cancel when you are prompted to Insert the CD
  • You have registry errors on your PC
Despite the error seeming highly problematic, the good news is that it's really easy to fix if you know what the causes of the issue are, and how to resolve them in the most effective way. This tutorial is going to show you how to fix this error for good.

This error will typically show in this format:

* "Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office1033\Setup.hlp."

The problem you're seeing is that your PC is basically unable to correctly process the settings that your system requires to run the installation program. Each time you install a piece of software onto your computer, your PC will need to transfer all the settings that the program will need in order to run.

To fix this error, you're going to need to be able to fix any of the issues which are leading the problem to show, which can be done by following the steps:

  • Step 1:  Make sure that your PC can read all the settings which it needs to run the installer. This can be done by first ensuring that you have the latest versions of Windows Installer &/or Install Shield allowing your PC to install the software correctly. After that, you then need to be sure that your computer can correctly read the settings and files that are required to complete the installation. It's advisable that you copy the installer files from your CD / installation medium to your computer which should allow your system to read the installation files correctly.
  • The second step to fix this problem is to be able to repair any of the issues that may be inside the "registry database" of your PC. The registry is a central database which stores all the settings & options that your computer requires to run, and is a very important part of your system. Despite this database being highly important, it's continually causing a lot of problems for Windows as it will continually become damaged and corrupted. If your computer is showing errors such as the 1706 error, even after upgrading the Windows Installer / InstallShield application, cleaning the registry could be the way to resolve the problem.
